“I’ve been doing this for about a year…but I’ve always been writing songs, I just sort of didn’t do anything with them. …But now I am. And everyone seems to like it, which is nice.” – Florence + The Machine
“We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.” – Decca rejecting the Beatles in 1962
“All you need is ignorance and confidence, and success is sure!” – Mark Twain.
I love creative things…I love art…and I love music. But I find it so interesting, to see what takes off in popular culture and what doesn’t, and quite frankly, I get so annoyed when I hear about how many albums Lady GaGa has sold, I laugh when I think of Justin Bieber, and I wonder with all my heart who in the world is buying Kesha’s album’s on I-tunes to make her number one?!!… Sigh, alright, so glad I got that off my chest:).
But the point is, there are a number of different things that may make something “a hit” that really have nothing to do with the actual quality of the thing itself. So what I absolutely love to hear about, are things like the quote about the Beatles above. Sometimes, it takes a while for something really great, to be recognized as really great. …Take Jane Austen for instance, she died before her most beloved novels were ever called “beloved”, before “I Love Lucy”, Lucille Ball was told numerous times to try another profession, in Emily Dickenson’s lifetime, fewer than 12 of her 1,800 poems were ever published, Jack London’s first story received 600 rejection slips before finally being accepted, and Ludwig van Beethoven was told over and over by teachers, that he would never succeed!!!
Which just goes to say, that ”really great things” might not come in the package that popular culture declares it will, and that truly being “great” is not trying to fit into the culture, but stand out. And in today’s day, that might even mean just being…well normal!! Along with quality, talent, hardwork, and with a touch of imagination, and dreams. …I like Julia Child’s recipe for success! :
“This is my invariable advice to people: Learn to cook, try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!” – Julia Child
So here are some songs I’ve been listening to from a great little music project called “Watch.Listen.Tell”. These bands are definitely not Kesha look-a-likes, which is probably why I like them.
I’m a sucker for a good clapping number with awesome harmony, and this has such a sweet vintage/retro sound with a modern spin.
I really love this song! And I really like Two Door Cinema club!…and they’re Irish!!! U2 is Irish…Far & Away is an Irish movie…plus the Irish have very cool accents. This song is so catchy without compromising good guitar riffs and genuine style.
She has a nice mix of J.J. Heller and Gemma Hayes in my opinion. I like it for a song to put on while driving through the country in the evening, when the sun is going to set soon.

Great Post
“Something” is my favorite Beatles song! And I happen to come from Lucille Ball’s hometown!
This post can be applicable to life, itself. Sometimes, good things come in unrecognizable packages, until you give them a fair shake. Sometimes, it is okay to be surprised by the unexpected, because it may just usher in true happiness.
Great post! Kudos on FP!
Wow! I jus superloved ur blog! Lovellly it is!!
)
Thank you!
It’s nice to see a real emphasis on MUSIC instead of image.
Thank you for sharing!
Seriously, what depths of teen hell did Beiber crawl out of? Love your point about “normal” being the real way to stand out in today’s music scene! Thanks for sharing the music…that Lucy Rose is awesome!
I can see why this made “Freshly Pressed.” There is such a great quality of sincerity in your writing. Not writing for writing’s sake but writing to share honest feelings and observations. Many have told me that my poetry work is good, but still my greatest retracter is my own wife. Truthfully she does not like my work, nor can she stand to hear it or read it. She relates that it is depressing. I say life in general is depressing. We grow old and sick and die. Kind of like the Marine saying, “Life is a Bitch, and then you Die.” Still I believe along the way, there are those that are truly helped by my work. That, my dear friends, is what keeps me continually to write.
Thanks so much for your comment on my writing:). I haven’t read your poems, but see that you also have an honesty in your writing. I think that you are very right, that it is such an important ingredient. I hope you don’t let people’s negative opinions get you down. Keep writing! I think that though you are right, life is hard, and shouldn’t be “sugar coated”, it, on the other hand, has beauty in it too. Don’t bypass that altogether I hope:). Life can also be good. And if you have the Lord especially, even the hard and worst of things can be worked together for the good in your life.
Thanks for the comment,
Lindsay Elisabeth
Great post and congrats on being freshly pressed–
All the way from Haiti,

Great blog!
This was a wonderful post! I completely agree! And I love those songs you posted!
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
Thanks so much!
Oh, I love the Golden Silvers track!!! Had never heard it before.. I find the older I get the more mainstream top 40 pop bores me… excellent choices here!
I really like your style.
It.s so nice that you love art and crative thing.

This is great! Thanks for the post. I’m quite the YouTuber, subscribed to 200+ channels…mostly music and I hadn’t heard of this channel. Now I have some listening to do! Totally agree about “popular” music…I don’t understand how Bieber and Ga Ga can be selling albums like crazy when there is sooo much better talent out there playing in bars just to pay for gas to the next venue.
Couldn’t agree more. This applies to TV as well, where every random reality show and cop drama dominates the ratings while real intellectual serialized shows struggle to stay afloat.
Great post and congrats on being Freshly Pressed. I think there’s so much luck involved in what music or novels etc rise to the top and are acknowledged as being great. By the way, I really loved your list of things you love. It reads like a poem! Keep up the good work….

As a recording artist myself I have some of the exact same questions.
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.

Eleanor Rigby, Imagine, and Happy Christmas are my favorite Beatles tunes. I am totally NOT on board with the Beiber-fever; it blows my mind that he’s so popular!
Here’s a Beatles piece I wrote……

i like your blog:)
Thanks!! Glad that you like it!
It’s funny, in our modern societal landscape we tend to applaud only the creme of the crop… that is, the people who are funded enough to be in our faces 24/7
The issue then becomes (or should be), are these people worth of our praises?
If money is the only marker of success, and with so many people falling a*$ backwards into it, we can’t, and we shouldn’t, follow these trends.
The real shame is though, we know no other way…
Money, and the act of pursuing it, stifles creativity; it’s a basic conflict of interests…
End of story, and great post
It’s great to hear someone speak the truth.
I won’t deny that I enjoy a bit of the old Gaga and stuff that’s floating around these days, but it’s not even in the same league as the Beatles, and others alike.
Oh, and I loved the first video. Golden Silvers? One to add to the list, thank you

Thanks for your honest opinion. I think it’s cool when someone isn’t afraid to say what they truly like, no matter what!! And I understand the “draw” to Lady GaGa. I mean, she’s interesting and catchy, I’m not saying that she hasn’t got anything. I just think that there’s a difference between something that sells for the “outrageous” or “catchy” factor, and something that has genuine skill, talent, or quality behind it. So, I agree with you, that it’s just not in the same league:). …And I’m so glad you like that track from The Golden Silvers. I really like that one!!
Thanks again!!

Re: “things that may make something “a hit” that really have nothing to do with the actual quality of the thing itself…”
…I have a deep suspicion that Big Music is futzing the books: P2Ps have so drastically brought down actual “record sales” that there simply can not possibly be sufficient sales data to qualify a new release as a “hit.”
Or…is a #1 hit now just a teeny blip of, say, a few thousand sales?
But Frankly, my dear, I haven’t given a damn about _any_ new “music” since the 1970s. Record labels no longer cultivate talent. Instead they patch together instant tacky pastiches like “Ga Ga”, Britney and Bieber and the great unwashed masses accept this garbage like a bunch of sheep!
Good Gawd! Where did the giant talents go?
Haha, yes I understand your hesitation to give interest to any recent artists. But really I believe there are a few quality artists out there…and some of them even do make it!!! …Maybe you do just honestly love old sound, so I included the Golden Silvers in this post because I liked their vintage sound. May I also suggest the Kooks or The Morning Benders to you. Also… for a sound of their own, Coldplay has done very well in the music “buz” and I personally think they are absolutely wonderfully talented!!
But I do agree that it is hard to “measure” success in today’s digital world. People don’t really buy albums anymore, they purchase “singles” on I-tunes. And that is a whole ‘nother deal than an artist’s album doing well. And I understand that.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Lindsay Elisabeth
Great points!
Your featured artists are much more entertaining than Gaga.
When you get a chance, check out Lalah Hathaway…stunning vocalist with serious pipes!
Thanks, I’ll have to check her music out!!
Hi. I really like the choice of songs especially the Magic touch. I agree with the statement that today’s music industry is blind or deaf to real talented musicians with good ideas and innovative sounds. What I seek in music is the sense of harmony and melodic disharmony too. Personally as a creative music writer I select these interesting sounds and chords. I would be grateful for your time and opinion about my music. listen to my songs especially the one called ‘Beginning’ and write to me what do you think. Here is the link:

Pshaw, how vapid is a Schumann song cycle? A Mahler symphony? Ravel’s Bolero? Jacques Attali’s critique of the Repetition phase in music is apt, and he points to Spengler’s end of Civilization era (the 1850s) for when it becomes prominent.
Yet you show an acoustic song in the repetitious style of campfire singalongs, a band so easily compared to U2, and another acoustic ditty track…. You seek variety, yet run to safety…
At any rate, the lack of recognition of artists during their time, or as they were developing, simply shows that it’s hard to be an artist of any kind. While now, it’s a little less draconian, you still deal with people who tell you to pack your things, especially as you write stranger and stranger musics.
That you denounce Kesha, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber, all of whom are allegedly simply doing what they love (unless you don’t count Bach’s organ music and fugues as good music, many of which were simply commercial ventures), then show an equally-marketed music venture as a counter-example really shows your, and most people’s with “discerning taste in music,” spots.
Question: Is that truly what Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber love? Seeing the differences in their styles on youtube until now doesn’t show that they’re doing what they love. Gaga can play the piano, where is that talent? Bieber plays guitar, where is that talent? They are only interested in getting famous, not doing what they love. They love to be famous, which who wouldn’t? But if they can get famous, then so can everybody else. So what’s the point of them getting paid to do the same things that I can do? It’d be different if they had/used talent that would be hard to imitate, it’d be worth the price. But all they’re doing is putting beats to music, computer to voice, and taking off clothes and showing their face, with lyrics that have no lyrical meaning to the person singing it. Putting good money after bad? I don’t think so. I’d rather put good money after good music then waste my time with a singer who is doing something I can do.
The songs Kesha and Bieber can be sung by anyone. What kind of talent is that? Why should I purchase that album? Why should they be famous?
You use big words. You must be a genius of substantial consequence. Perhaps I am talking to the Freud of modern music!!! So it’s hard for such a simple person like me to answer your comment. But you used the word “denounced.” I looked that big word up, and I must tell you that I do not feel hatred toward any of them. The only thing I feel when I think of them, is as I said before, like laughing. They can do what they love, I think they love being famous, and that’s what they are, so I guess they are happy …You also seem to think that my choices in music are just as “talentless” as Kesha or the rest, but my dear Mr. Collins, you forget what talent is, it is the natural endowment of ability or quality. and I think that Kesha and Beiber are famous for their natural ability to shock people, the quality of their hair, and the sexual references of their lyrics… hmm..none of these have to do with music. My point is that I wish that music was more appreciated for its quality of sound, skill, and art, more than the singer in tight pants performing it. I’m not saying this will change anytime soon, I just am pointing out some musicians who I believe care more about their art than the amount of fans they have or the amount of clothes they put on (…or don’t put on for that matter). These musicians catch the attention of the listener with pure talent, and musical quality, rather than curse words or sexual references, like Kesha or GaGa.
But thank you, I feel rather honored to have recieved your highly refined opinion on the matter. And it’s nice to know that their are brilliant people out there willing to take the time to correct the said, mis-informed opinions of 18 year olds on their blogs:).
Thanks again,
Lindsay Elisabeth

killer tunes. great post.

Thanks!
Yeah, what did happen to good music? And what holds for music in the future… will there ever be quality w/o the record label.
I like the clapping video. They remind me of the show Glee.
I get Kesha songs for free from the library. I only have a couple of them. They have a good beat for dancing. It is just a fun sound. I put on my MP3 player and dance around when I cook dinner.
I like the clapping video by The Golden Silvers too:)! Thanks for your comment! …And I undertsand that it’s fun to find a song to dance too! I like a song with an dancy beat every now and then also. So I’m not AGAINST listening to Kesha or Beiber or GaGa, I just personally don’t think they have the talent to match up with how famous they are. I don’t mind if they are listened to or liked, I just wish that they wouldn’t be counted as “great musicians”.
But for me, my dancing songs are:
“You Make My Dreams Come True” – Hall & Oates “Give A Little More” – Maroon 5 “Put A Ring On It” -Beyonce “Just The Way You Are” – Bruno Mars “Animal” – Neon Trees or “Human” – The Killers.
Thanks again for your opinion! I appreciate it:)!!

can’t agree with u more! i found top 10 pop music quite annoying and they are nothing compared to my favorite british rock!!
The British do have a knack for rocking!!
The BEATLES was the grrreatest band of all time. Why, because not only they do got the brains and the looks, but most importantly, the members were MADMEN. They were fearless. They were bold. And they were being themselves at the same time having fun. When you have these qualities, the gods will smile on you.
*great post*
Thanks for the comment!
I love the Lucy Rose one and you couldn’t be more right. I am amazed by what makes it and what doesn’t. There are some amazing pieces of art, music, literature which don’t end up making it very far. Thanks for sharing a littler bit with us.
Thanks for commenting:)! I appreciate your thoughts!! I’m always amazed at what makes it and what doesn’t too.

What a refreshing post… I’m so glad I’m not the only one who is annoyed by the standards of pop culture! And I love that quote by Julia Child. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!! I really like many of Julia Child’s quotes, so I’m glad you liked it:). Thank you for commenting!

When I listen to Lady Gaga’s music and not watch the videos, I am intrigued by her phrasings- lyrical and music. Beiber and the trashy Ke$ha I can do without. But success is dumb luck for some. Interesting post with food for thought.
I’m so glad you shared your thoughts. I understand your intrest and the “intrigue” of Gaga…she’s different and outrageous…but I feel that she is more famous for the “schock factor” of her lyrics, her outfits, her dancing, her actions, than the actual quality of her music. Even Ozzy Osbourne suggested she cool it for a bit with the weirdness. She’s “interesting,” and that’s why she’s big. But I’m glad you’re not afraid to like her, and I think it’s cool that you can consider other people’s thoughts on music, I hope that I can do the same
Thanks for your thoughts!

I remember seeing a very candid video of Lissie on a now defunct website called Songpull about three or four years ago. It was a great site that had amateur songwriters meet once a month and present songs they had written in 30 days.
Doing some quick research on her, I’m amazed at how far she’s come in such a short time.
p.s. congrats on being freshly pressed!
you love this blog: D
interesting writing: D
really like that art makes us happy
Those are some Amazing songs. Don’t hear them very often where I live.
Great post. It seems that good music is being replaced by popular music!
Oh, yes, it’s quite easy to dismiss Gaga has just another fad–but she’s done SO MUCH for the LGBT community that she’s far beyond the ranks of hacks like Ke$ha.
And Emily Dickinson only published twelve poems because she had no desire to edit them for commerical appeal–not because nobody was interested.
I wasn’t attacking Lady GaGa as a person in my post (I know nothing about her as a person other than what I see through her songs). But you can’t make a case for her being a great musician based off of what she does for LGBT.
And as for Emily Dickenson, I wasn’t arguing that no one was intersted. She is just proof that sometimes “things that are truly great” take a while to be known as “truly great”. Whether she wanted her poems published or not, it took a while for them to be known and go down in history.
Very nice….. thanks for sharing…
Nice post. Thanks for posting it.
Awesome post. Love the songs, thank you.
Music has definitely gone through some changes, not all of them good. I used to go to small clubs to hear live music, and I miss it.
There are some big independent film festivals, and there should more of the same for music.
Like this kind of music..very talented.
I agree. Popular music and a lot of the media out there is more defined by quantity than quality, although that is not to say that there aren’t exceptions. Although in the time of the Beatles that became the case or a lot of great artists that we have come to listen to and sing along to. But in this day in age a lot of people listen to the crowd leaving new indie artists a tougher hill to climb in terms of popularity.

The Beatles will forever stay in our hearts.
Thanks for this beautiful post and congrats on being Freshly Pressed! I share you sentiments about ‘being you’ and sticking your neck out…
I wrote a short story recently titled “Olembe’s Last Christmas”, about a chicken. It’s an attempt at humanizing chickens and entering into their minds. I got a few commendations and some criticism. That was my biggest exposure to criticism so far, but I have learnt to pick what works for me, and still not kill my originality. My writing career just started!
Thanks for the videos too!

It have a theory.
The mainstream popular music and art scene well people already know about them.
If you are doing something ground breaking or original the masses simply don’t know it exists until you get it in front of them.
Once you have hundreds of people will take the same idea and flog it to death
Therefore the only successful ones will be the ones the institutions choose to make popular, the rest will just get lost in the clutter.
That’s the downside to social media.
.
Right now i am doing many projects.
One of them is a revival of the silent movie genre, i am working on a series of comedic silent movies. one of them is already up
Thing is silent movies are now in history so people simply aren’t looking for it unless it’s for a school project.
Perseverance and clever marketing is the only way such ideas can kick off
Congratulations on being pressed. Love Golden Silvers: great retro sound and real talent.
LOVE Golden Silvers!
Great post!
The first thing I thought about was the title… Because it’s almost exactly the same as my blog-title “Watch, Listen, Feel”
I’m not as good of a writer though!
interesting article, is the first entered in this site and will not be the last
Greetings
Nice post! I do get annoyed when people say “you can’t succeed” or “it’ll be really really tough” (which is the same thing really, but less harsh) because it just lowers self-esteem. Even though it goes through the roof when you prove that person wrong!
Love your musical picks too!
Creativity is key a lot of music lacks that today
Great blog

So AGREE! Normal is the main difference! It’s unique!
Singers like Janelle Monae and Duffy can’t get in like some of these other artsists, and they have the talent! I think the whole industry is backwards. The horrible singers are famous and the real talent isn’t. It’s the modeling industry now. Instead of selling music, they’re selling their bodies and fashions.

Thanks for the comment! Glad you like my blog:). I checked out yours, “The Mused Eye”, very cool blog. Great pictures and posts. Thanks for sharing.
The sales charts ratings system is skewed towards Pop acts because of their widely commercially available music catalog and because a lot of people who like that type of music tend to pay for it. Underground and Indie bands sell their CD’s after small bar shows and out of the back hatches of vans. Also, their fan bases do a lot of online music searching and downloading.

Great post! As a classical musician, I think a lot about this, especially when I see that in comparison to these pop musicians, our music isn’t really in the limelight. It’s undeniable that classical music is good music.
It’s really sad to see that the really really good music, like my classical and your bands, are often overlooked in favor of something often much shallower.
I definitely agree with you! It is a sad thing. But at least there are some people out there who appreciate good music! I personally love classical music!! So it’s very cool that you are a classical musician. Keep plugging away! I know there are people out there who appreciate your music!! And thanks for the comment!
Nice post!
Thank you so much for posting Lucy Rose and for being on the front page of the music tag at the right time! I will definitely be listening to more of her if I can and impecable choices with Golden Silvers and Two Door Cinema Club too!
I can appreciate your views on popular music, there are so many truly talented musicians who sit in the shadows of the likes of gaga. Its just a good job there are many people seeking them out!
Nice videos!
And you’re right, the best sellers aren’t always the best artists on earth right now, and it may be frustrating for those who work hard for several years without succeeding one day.
However, I don’t like to hear everywhere people being so negative about Lady Gaga (i won’t speak about Justin Bieber since I think the same).
But for instance, artists (yes, artists) such as Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas or even David Guetta deserve their success.
People like to think that simple music with a single guitar and a great voice is real music. They are right, but it doesn’t mean performers aren’t. They work as hard as those unknown people, with much more pressure and always deliver great performances.
If they sell so much CD, if they are so famous, it means they answer to the population needs in terms of music. They are able to create a phenomenon wherever they go and are smart to establish links with the right persons in the music industry. They are complete and genuine artists, they have a strong image (weird or not) and just for that, we should congratulate and honor them.
Being a singer or a musician is “easy”. Being an accomplished performer is not for everyone. And Lady Gaga is one of the best right now.
thank you for your sharing:)
AWESOME POST! I thought I was the only person who didin’t understand Lady Gaga’s success but it seems that there are more.
I hate pop. I love rock. Pretty simple, uh? So I just don’t get it when people go crazy about Justin Bieber or any other “new artist”, like Kesha, whose music I’ve heard once or twice and I don’t remember anything about it but that I didn’t like it.
Cool bands the ones that you posted and I think I should pay more attention to them because the “newest” band I like is from the early 90′s (Los Tres, from Chile); that and The Beatles, love them!
I’ve just spent nearly half an hour reading your wonderful post and the really interesting comments – and of course enjoying the music you shared with us – thank you for that (although I should have been doing other things like cleaning, washing, preparing my lessons etc – procrastination at it’s best!)
It made me think aboput music, which I do very often. My blog is about song lyrics and I must say that I am really surprised to find interesting lyrics even in top charts songs. I don’t know: who decides which music is “good”? Maybe we will only know after a couple of years or even decades – which music stays, which one is forgotten? It’s the same with classical music. Not every composer made it to our century, right?
Anyway, I’m gald there is this wide variety of music so everyone can choose. Thanks again for your choice!
